Calamity City Series

After creating the quadriptych, Calamity City has turned into a series (presently ongoing) that ponders on current events in and outside of the Philippines. The first four paintings were made in January 2020, when parts of the country were experiencing the devastating effects of the impending eruption of Mt.Taal. Months later, news of a pandemic broke out which resulted in lockdowns, quarantines, and the magnification of problems in the systems in place.

Working on Calamity City became a respite, a release, and a form of reflection. Aptly written in Morse code, hidden messages litter the works, many of which are cries for help, calls for justice, and expressions of exhaustion.

We all deserve to have better lives.
